Special Notice

In view of the latest situation of COVID-19, library facilities including Hong Kong Central Library and the six major libraries (City Hall, Kowloon, Tsuen Wan, Sha Tin, Tuen Mun and Ping Shan Tin Shui Wai Public Library) reopened earlier this month will be temporarily closed starting from March 23 (Monday). Other public libraries and their Students’ Study Room, Mobile Libraries will continue to be temporarily closed until further notice. All book drop services of the Hong Kong Public Libraries and those located at three MTR stations as well as the self-service library stations at Island East Sports Centre Sitting-out Area, the Hong Kong Cultural Centre and Tsuen Nam Road, Tai Wai will also suspend services. During the period, public libraries will continue to provide online services such as e-Books and e-Databases. Overdue fines will not be generated for late return of library materials, due date of reservation pick up will be extended and the maximum number of renewal will be increased accordingly. Books Registration

The Books Registration Office
has introduced a new version of
Books Registration Form
on 1 July 2018

 

The Books Registration Ordinance (Chapter 142 of the Laws of Hong Kong) stipulates that:

  1. The publisher of a new book shall, within 1 month after the book is published, printed, produced or otherwise made in Hong Kong, deliver to the Books Registration Office free of charge 5 copies of the book, together with all maps, prints or other engravings belonging thereto, properly bound, sewed or stitched and produced on the best paper on which the book and any map, print or other engraving thereto is printed or produced. (Remark: "Books" include every book, magazine, journal, annual report, or other similar kind of periodical publication.)  
  2. Any person who contravenes the Books Registration Ordinance shall be guilty of an offence and shall be liable on conviction to a fine of $2,000.  

 

 

 

Books Not Required for Registration

  1. A newspaper which issues its editions not less than 4 times a week.  
  2. Any book which will not be made available to the public at large.  
  3. A publication which consists solely of a price list, sale catalogue, trade circular or trade advertisement.     

How to Apply for Books Registration

  1. Within one month after a new book is made, deliver FIVE copies of the book and the completed Books Registration Form (in duplicate) to the Books Registration Office (BRO) by post or in person.  To avoid delay of the registration process, please ensure that the information provided in the Form accords with that of the book.  
  2. Any accompanying materials to the book (such as maps, prints, or other engravings) must also be delivered in FIVE sets to the BRO for registration.  
  3. All books and accompanying materials submitted are not returnable.  
  4. Books registration is free of charge.
